Review of the TaxSlayer Tax Preparation Software

Oct 26, 2023 By Triston Martin

As Rhodes-Murphy & Co. TaxSlayer was established in Augusta, Georgia, in 1965. Over time, the company shifted its focus from providing tax preparation services directly to consumers to developing software specifically for CPAs and tax preparers.

Later, it was developed into consumer tax preparation software. Its current management team and headquarters remain under the same family's control. At-home filers can choose from four different TaxSlayer offerings. What is taxslayer?

TaxSlayer's Featured Goods

Simply Free

Simply Free is a smart alternative if your tax situation is straightforward and you just need to file your federal and first-state returns. Using a student loan interest deduction and educational credits, this free version will import tax returns from competing services and help you get the biggest refund possible. During tax season, you may get free phone and email help from the company.

Classic

Suppose you own a property, are an investor, or otherwise qualify for certain deductions and credits. In that case, Classic may be the right choice because it was created with many scenarios in mind. It has everything the free version has, plus the option to input a PDF of your W-2.

If you used taxSlayer to file your taxes last year, you may import that information into Classic and use it to compare it with your current income, deductions, and credits to see how accurate your filing is.

If the Internal Revenue Service approaches you regarding your return, Classic also includes help for up to a year. Active-duty military personnel may get taxslayer free for Military, including all the Classic edition's features.

Premium

Consider Premium if you are a first-time tax filer or anticipate a more complex tax position. Any technical questions you may have will be considered first, saving you time. If you are subject to an IRS audit, you will have access to unlimited phone and email consultations with an in-house tax expert.

Self-Employed

The Self-Employed version of TaxSlayer includes all of the features of the Premium version, plus access to a dedicated staff of tax experts that specialize in working with independent contractors.

They can help you make sense of your company deductions, Schedule C, and 1099s. You won't have to dig around to find what you need since the Self-Employed interface is loaded with helpful hints and reminders tailored to the needs of self-employed filers.

What Does It Cost To Use TaxSlayer?

If you choose the Simply Free option, filing your federal taxes and one state tax return will cost you nothing. If your tax situation is straightforward and you need minimal assistance, TaxSlayer may cost you nothing.

The price of a federal tax return preparation service increases from $17.95 to $37.95 and $47.95 afterwards. Each state tax return will cost you $36.95.

These programs provide significant savings over the expense of hiring an accountant. For instance, top-tier programs like TurboTax, H&R Block, and TaxAct cost extra.

Comparing TaxSlayer With The Cash App To Pay Taxes

TaxSlayer and Cash App Taxes are excellent options for low-cost tax preparation software. Every one of them has a freemium option. There is no other way to pay taxes using the Cash App. The firm boasts that filing federal and state forms is free of charge.

You need to download the app to utilize it. However, TaxSlayer offers a total of five distinct configurations. Their basic plan is $17.95, their premium plan costs $37.95, and their self-employed plan costs $47.95. A special, free edition of the program is available to those already serving in the armed forces.

Cash App Taxes is the ideal option if you're looking for a quick and easy refund. If a customer requests a refund via Cash App, they may get it within two days. TaxSlayer might be a better option if you require more customization options or have a more complicated tax situation.

Comparison Between TaxSlayer vs TurboTax

It's common knowledge that TurboTax costs more than TaxSlayer. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more expensive option for filing your taxes. TurboTax, however, offers a lot of value for the money. The fact that TurboTax has been named the best tax software company and the best tax mobile app in both lists is not coincidental.

A user-friendly interface is a hallmark of the corporation, and this reputation has endured for years. Professionals have praised TurboTax for its easy-to-understand explanations of complex tax topics, helpful online assistance, and thorough assessment of your completed return.

However, some taxpayers do not want to pay for all those optional services because they do not feel they are necessary. TaxSlayer is an excellent option if it describes you. It provides a secure method to finish your tax return at a fraction of the cost of TurboTax.
